We, at SHED, were ecstatic to hear from the team at Unity, famous for their real-time rendering engine.
They wanted us to collaborate to the creation of a short film.
Where we’re often hired to do photorealistic rendering, in this case, we were asked to help develop the storyline and direct the sequence in addition to creating characters and the environments they would live in.
We were able to work side by side with them at every step of the creative process from storyboards to animating the 3d animatic while also conceptualizing and directing the film.
From draft to motion capture, this was an adventure we won’t forget !
Here is a peek into the work.
Script in hand, we quickly started to visualize the universe within which we would navigate.
We started by creating styleframes to situate ourselves in the locations and the atmospheres of the world the characters would live in.
These were created by using a mix of 3D, pictures and Photoshop painting.
COLORBOARD
With the styleframes completed, we moved on to the summary colorboard.
This would allow us to define the main ambiances and colour schemes of the film.
PERSONNAGES-CHARACTERS DESIGN
Scavenger, our heroine, a strong woman, an adventurous yet caring and devoted mother, started to come to life from sketches to coloured versions.
First Modelizations
We made sure, through clothing choices and equipment design, that the characters could not be situated in a specific timeline.
So we created futuristic space suits with a retro touch.
Minors on board the Stakhanov.
CONCEPT ART
Some finer detailed set work comes to life.
These images were created by painting light and colours over summary set models.
The atmosphere is cold, sombre, even macabre.
You understand that something is not right on the ship while roaming its hull.
Scavenger endlessly meandering the ships infinite corridors.
3D RENDERINGS OF THE ENVIRONMENTS
The crew quarters.
The Stakhanov, a factory ship, mostly made of rough metal.
The entry airlock Scavenger uses upon her arrival.
The factory and more corridors occupy the ship’s decks.
The corridors, all similar, seem endless, newcomers always get lost in their maze.
A preview of the ship’s main hub, the large platform where Scavenger meets the mining crew.
What is Wraith?
Wraith is still in the development stages. It’s SHED’s first incursion in the video game world.
Since this project, we were able to work on other gaming projects. This is a media we truly love for the creative liberty it allows.
We truly look forward to showing you more of our work and explorations in this territory.
